What is ETIAS and who needs it?
The EU's new travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors - what it is, who it applies to, and how to get one.
ETIAS - the European Travel Information and Authorisation System - is an online travel authorisation for visitors who can currently enter the Schengen Area without a visa. It is not a visa: it is a pre-screening step that links to your passport before you travel.
Who needs it
ETIAS applies to nationals of countries that enjoy visa-free short stays in the Schengen Area - for example travellers on many non-EU passports who today simply show up with a valid passport. If you already need a Schengen visa, ETIAS does not apply to you; you continue to apply for a visa as before.
How it works
You apply online, pay a small fee, and in most cases receive approval quickly. The authorisation is tied to your passport and is valid for multiple short stays over a period of years, or until the passport expires. At the border you still pass the usual checks; ETIAS is an added layer, not a replacement for them.
What to watch for
Apply well before you travel rather than at the airport, make sure the passport you apply with is the one you travel on, and re-check the current start date - rollout dates for schemes like this move. VisAlert flags changes to ETIAS timelines and requirements as they are published.
